How to Make Cannabutter: Turning Ordinary Butter Into a Potent Delight

Making cannabutter is easier than you think! With a little bit of patience (and some low heat), you can transform your regular ol’ butter into a powerhouse ingredient for all your cannabis-infused culinary adventures. Ready to elevate your cooking game? Let’s get started!

Materials

  • Baking sheet (or whatever fits in the oven)
  • Parchment paper (don’t skip this, or things could get sticky)
  • Oven (obviously)
  • Saucepan, stock pot, double-boiler, or slow cooker (your cooking sidekick)
  • Mesh strainer or cheesecloth (unless you enjoy chunky butter)
  • Container for butter (because spilling would be a tragedy)
  • Cannabis grinder (or just your hands—get personal)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup ground cannabis (7-10 grams), decarboxylated

When making cannabutter, we recommend a 1:1 ratio of cannabis to butter. If you want milder effects, use less cannabis.

Step 1: Decarboxylate Your Cannabis

First things first, you’ve gotta activate the THC. Think of it as giving your cannabis a little warm-up before the big show. Spread your cannabis evenly on a baking sheet and pop it into an oven preheated to 245°F (118°C) for 30–40 minutes. Remember to stir every 10 minutes—because no one likes unevenly toasted buds!

Step 2:

Break down the cannabis into smaller pieces. Using a grinder ensures a consistent texture and saves time, but you can also break it apart by hand. Just be cautious—anything small enough to pass through a mesh strainer or cheesecloth may end up in your final product, so avoid grinding it into a fine powder.

Step 3: Melt the Butter

Time to melt that butter! In a medium saucepan, melt your butter over low heat. Keep the heat low because burnt butter (and burnt dreams) are not on the menu today.

Step 4: Add Cannabis

Once the butter has melted into liquid gold, it’s time for the magic to happen! Add your decarboxylated cannabis to the pan and let it simmer on low heat for 2 to 3 hours. Patience is key here—stir occasionally and avoid letting it boil. Remember, high heat equals unhappy THC!

Step 5: Strain the Mixture

Now, this part feels like you’re on a cooking show! Line a strainer with cheesecloth and place it over a bowl. Slowly pour your buttery creation through the cheesecloth to strain out the plant material. Don’t forget to squeeze that cheesecloth to get every last drop of your precious cannabutter!

Step 6: Cool and Store

Let your cannabutter cool at room temperature (because, honestly, it deserves a little break). Once it’s cooled, pop it into an airtight container and store it in the fridge—or go ahead and use it right away if you can’t wait. Cannabutter can hang out in your fridge for a few weeks, ready to add a cannabis kick to any dish.

So there you have it! Your cannabutter is ready to take your culinary creations to a whole new level. Spread it, bake it, or drizzle it—because now every dish can have a buttery buzz! 😋🍃

FAQ

THCA is one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. THCA is the precursor to THC, which is responsible for the “high” associated with marijuana. THCA Hemp looks, smells, tastes, and gets you high like marijuana. THCA, in its raw form, has no psychoactive effects, However, once THCA is heated (a lighter sparking a joint), it decarboxylates and converts to THC and gets you high. The effects from THCA Hemp are the same as the flower you would pick up at your local dispensary.

Yes! THCA is 100% federally legal. The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, commonly known as the Farm Bill, legalized hemp. It defines hemp as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC by dry weight, distinguishing it from marijuana. The hemp we grow on the farm is high in THCA, but below the 0.3% THC threshold. Some state level laws vary from the federal law, so please check where you live. We have a list of states we are unable to ship to in the shipping section.

Other cannabinoids found in lower amounts in our flower are CBG and CBD. These non-psychoactive cannabinoids work in synergy with THCA to create a loosening of the body and promote feelings of relaxation and relief, along with the elevated high of THCA.

Terpenes are the fragrant oils found in the cannabis plant. These are what give each strain its own unique aroma and taste.  Terpenes work in synergy with cannabinoids, so each strain can bring its own unique experience to the user.
